Neurodiversity Affirming Therapy

“Refusing to perform neurotypicality is a revolutionary act of disability justice. It is also a radical act of self-love.”
- Devon Price, Unmasking Autism

Neurodiversity-affirming recognizes that neurodivergence itself is not a flaw, illness, or something to be “fixed”.

Neurodiversity is the naturally-occurring differences and variety in brain functioning and behavioral traits in the human population. It describes that there is no one “right” way of thinking, learning, and behaving. Furthermore, these differences are not deficits.

Therapy that is neurodiversity affirming:

  • Recognizes that neurodivergence is not a flaw or needs to be “fixed”

  • Acknowledges that neurodivergence can be disabling

  • Explores the uniqueness of the client’s experience (i.e. identity-first)

  • Connects clients to community and support

  • Fosters self-determination and identity

My approach to neurodiversity affirming therapy.

Whether you were diagnosed formally as a child, are curious about a formal or informal diagnosis as an adult, or identify as neurodivergent, I aim to create a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental place for you to process your experiences. Whatever your goals are, my plan is to guide you as you work towards those goals, helping you identify, accept, and overcome barriers along the way.

Some of my most used modalities to provide neurodiversity-affirming therapy are: Internal Family Systems (IFS)-Informed Parts Work, trauma-informed Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Polyvagal-Informed Somatic interventions. These modalities focus on promoting internal trust & curiosity, calming the autonomic nervous system, psychoeducation, and creating your own value-based behaviors & beliefs.
